Saving Sugarcane Cutter

We Envision Mankind's Misery Can Be Alleviated By Other Mankind Who Already Have Received The Comfort.

We feel we are called upon to give of our lives in order to alleviate misery.

‘Sweet Sugar, Bitter Sweat, Searching for Remedy Balm’

Beginning in the year 2010 for seven  years c/o Mission Ryan, Julian Choe, M.D. and Mr. Mark Zimmerman will become full-time missionaries to twenty-five (25) sugarcane plantations in the Dominican Republic. Within those seven years they will establish a basic health care network for the indigent sugarcane cutters.

Mission Ryan’s vision and goal are to alleviate misery from the underprivileged sugarcane plantation workers by providing proper sanitation methods, potable drinking water, eradication of  intestinal parasites, delivery of primary care medical services, and treatment of hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia.  In addition, they will build mini-clinics in each of the villages.

Poverty in the sugarcane plantations of the Dominican Republic is well known.  Many of these villages lack potable drinking water, electricity, basic food staples, and basic health care. Villagers walk miles to fetch water, cook over firewood, and eat whatever they can forage. They have no preventive health care, and if they become ill, they lack access to immediate medical care.

Moreover, poverty in the plantations in the Dominican Republic is distinguished by the pervasiveness of a slave trait, a relic from the days of the African slave trade of the 1800s in the ship Madagascar. Descendents of Haitian migrant workers have low expectations regarding basic healthcare, nourishment, and clean water.

This Mission Ryan project needs an annual average funding of $270,000 (two hundred seventy thousand US dollars per year) for seven years. It will cover medical equipment, medical supplies, living stipend, an off-road automobile, and out-reach supplies such as food and water.
